Many of you might be starting to reflect on your year and what you might like to change in 2025. Of course, among the most popular New Year’s Resolutions is exercising more and adopting a healthier lifestyle in general – both of which I am a big advocate for.
After the overindulgence of Christmas, a lot of us feel the urge to move our bodies more, and Pilates is the ideal way to do this, and here’s why:
Can help improve chronic pain
Pilates can really help any chronic pain or joint pain sufferers out there. Being one of the most adaptable exercises means it can cater to all fitness levels and is an effective way of strengthening your core and enhancing your mobility.
Can help improve sleep quality
If you have trouble sleeping, then Pilates could be the perfect resolution for you as the stress-relieving and muscle-relaxing effects of the exercise can help improve your sleep patterns.
Easily accessible
Pilates requires very minimal equipment, so can be done easily at home or on the road if you’re travelling, making it easy to incorporate into a busy lifestyle.
Promotes consistency
Did you know, approximately 80% of New Year’s Resolutions fail by February? This is because people set too many unrealistic goals and the change in their life and routine is too big and not manageable or they realise the resolution they’ve made doesn’t actually interest them after all.
Pilates has varied routines and scalable difficulty levels, which helps keep things interesting. A monotonous routine quickly becomes very boring, so Pilates will keep you on your toes (literally!) and keep you coming back for more.
Builds a sense of community
Many people think taking up exercise means going to a gym on their own and feeling intimated and not knowing what they’re doing, but it doesn’t have to be a solo activity. Signing up to an exercise class is the best thing you can do as it connects you with like-minded people.
Working out with others is very motivating and it’s great to have a support system behind you, helping you stay committed to your resolution.
Builds a strong pelvic floor
For anyone with a weakened pelvic floor or for anyone recovering from childbirth, Pilates strengthens these muscles and can help improve bladder control and core stability.
Stops you sitting
A lot of us are sitting down for long periods of time due to work, so Pilates helps combat the effects of a sedentary lifestyle. It helps improve circulation and reduces postural imbalances.
There are so many physical and mental benefits of doing Pilates, more of which I talked about in my previous blog post here (https://ehsportstherapy.com/pilates-is-for-everyone/), so I encourage anyone out there to give it a go. After all, they say if you try something new every day for 21 days, it becomes a habit.
Fancy giving Pilates a go in 2025?
